Which plug-in solar kit should I get?
The short answer
One marked Compliant on the ENA register, 800W or less, that you can actually get here.
That’s what Manx Utilities will accept. Check delivery to the island before you order, because many sellers don’t ship here.
Plug-in solar kits are now sold by big UK retailers and online. Most of the advice you’ll find is written for England, Scotland and Wales, so here is what matters when you’re buying for an Isle of Man home.

What to look for
Compliant on the ENA register Must have
Manx Utilities only accepts kits marked Compliant on the ENA Connect Direct register. Being listed is not enough.
800W or less Must have
One unit per household. Many two-panel kits pair more panel wattage with an 800W inverter, so ask MU if unsure.
A built-in battery Not yet
No compliant kit includes one yet, and standalone plug-in batteries are not allowed.
It plugs straight in Check
No extension leads or adapters are allowed, so you need a suitable socket within reach of the cable.
A mount that suits your space Check
Ground frames, walls and balconies all work differently. Planning rules may apply to walls and conservation areas.
Delivery to the island Check
Panels are large, about 1.76m long. Confirm the seller delivers to IM postcodes, or plan another route.
One panel or two?
One-panel kit
400 to 500W
Two-panel kit
800W kit, about 900 to 1,300W of panels

Questions to ask before you buy
- Is this exact model marked Compliant on the ENA register?Ask for the ENA System Reference, then check it yourself on the register. You’ll need it for your Manx Utilities application.
- Do you deliver to Isle of Man postcodes?Ask about any surcharge, and whether large items like panels are included.
- Can I collect it on the island? Some retailers with island branches offer click and collect. Confirm plug-in kits are included before you order.
- Can I return it if Manx Utilities declines it?Check the returns policy first. Better still, you may be able to apply to MU before you buy: see how to apply.
- What mounting is included?Ground frame, wall or balcony brackets, and whether extra ballast or fixings are needed.
What to avoid
- Kits marked Non-compliant on the register. Some makers list compliant and non-compliant versions with almost the same name, so match the exact model code.
- Battery kits. None is on the compliant list yet, and Manx Utilities does not allow standalone plug-in batteries.
- Kits designed to be chained together. Manx Utilities allows one unit per household.
- Older “microinverter” bundles sold as plug-in kits that are not listed in the register’s Plug-in Solar category. They may not meet Manx Utilities’ rules.
If the kit you want won’t ship here
Island forwarding services give you a UK delivery address and bring the parcel over. Check their size and weight limits, and the price, before you order, because solar panels are large.
Found a kit? Next, get Manx Utilities approval before you plug it in. The full rules are in our Isle of Man plug-in solar rules guide.
