How do I get Manx Utilities approval?
The short answer
Send MU one form with three things attached. It’s free.
Complete Manx Utilities’ Electricity Network Enquiry form with your kit’s details, the maker’s data sheet and its ENA reference. Then wait for MU’s letter before you plug in.
Do not connect the kit until MU has approved it in writing. MU is clear that no plug-in solar system may be connected or used without its consent.

Step by step
- Check you have a smart meterMU requires one for plug-in solar. If you don’t have one, MU says it will contact you to arrange fitting, so you can still apply.
- Choose a kit marked Compliant on the ENA registerOnly kits marked Compliant on the Energy Networks Association’s Connect Direct database are accepted, and only one unit of 800W or less per household. See how to choose a kit.
- Find the kit’s ENA reference numberMU asks for it on the form. Instructions are below.
- Check planning and permissions if they applyIf you live in a conservation area, ask Planning and Building Control first. If you rent, speak to your landlord. If you already have solar panels or a battery, contact MU before applying.
- Get an electrician’s safety check (MU strongly recommends it)MU strongly recommends having your wiring checked by an electrician registered with NICEIC, NAPIT or the ECA.
- Complete MU’s Electricity Network Enquiry formIt is an online form: open it from MU’s electricity network enquiry page. Include full details of the equipment you plan to install, the manufacturer’s data sheet, the ENA Connect Direct reference number, and a clear photo of your electricity meter and the area around it. Sending everything up front helps MU review it quickly. Prefer to talk to someone? Ring MU on 01624 687687.
- Wait for MU’s letterMU assesses the application against the legal, technical and safety standards, then writes to say whether it is approved or declined.
- Connect only once approvedPlug the kit straight into a suitable socket. No extension leads, travel adaptors or adapter plugs.
How to find the ENA reference number
- Open the ENA Connect Direct register. It is free and needs no login.
- Set the Type filter to Plug-in Solar.
- Search for the maker’s name.
- Match the exact model code on the box or product listing. Some makers list compliant and non-compliant versions with almost the same name.
- Check the Compliance Status says Compliant.
- Copy the System Reference. It looks like
ABCDE/21096/V1/A4: a maker code, a number, a version and an amendment.
The example reference only shows the format. The first part is a code for the maker. Always copy the reference for the exact kit you are buying.

Questions people ask
How long does Manx Utilities take to approve plug-in solar?
MU’s page does not give a timescale. It says sending full equipment details, the data sheet and the ENA reference up front helps it review your application quickly.
Should I buy the kit before I apply?
You may not need to. MU asks you to read its guidance before you buy, and its form asks for details of the equipment you plan to install. So you may be able to pick the exact model, apply with its data sheet and ENA reference, and buy once MU has approved it. MU’s guidance does not say this in so many words, so check with MU before you buy, on 01624 687687 or at enquiries@manxutilities.im. If you have already bought a kit, check the seller’s returns policy in case MU declines it.
What if my application is declined?
MU’s letter will say whether it is approved or declined. Do not connect a declined kit. Contact MU to ask why and what would be acceptable instead.
Do I need to reapply if I move house?
Yes. Tell MU once the kit has been removed from your old home, then submit a new application for the new address.
