Isle of Man Solar Guide

What do solar panels cost on the Isle of Man?

Independent Checked at the sourceLast updated

What do solar panels cost on the Isle of Man, and is my quote good value?

The short answer

Judge a quote by what the panels earn. Each kWp on a south-facing Douglas roof is worth about £203 a year if you use half the electricity at home.

Each installer sets its own price, so the figure that matters is your written quote. Put it in the checker below to see the payback time. Installing solar panels on the island carries a 0% rate of VAT until 31 March 2027.

A solar quote usually gives a total price and a system size in kWp, the panels’ rated power. Divide one by the other and you have the price per kWp, which lets you compare quotes of different sizes. Then set it against what each kWp will make here and what Manx Utilities pays or charges for that electricity.

On the quote, usually written as kWp. Ten 400W panels make 4 kWp.

The rest is exported and paid at the Sustainable Generation rate.

The last column of the table is a shortcut. If your quote works out at £1,500 per kWp, multiply the figure by 1.5. So at half the electricity used at home, a quote of £1,500 per kWp pays back in about 7.4 years on a south-facing Douglas roof.

Yields from the European Commission’s PVGIS 5.3, allowing 14% for system losses, queried on 30 September 2026. Rates from Manx Utilities’ domestic tariffs page: 29.5p for each unit you use instead of buying, and 9.7p for each unit exported under the Sustainable Generation tariff.

0% VAT until 31 March 2027

The Isle of Man Treasury applies a temporary zero rate of VAT to the supply and installation of energy-saving materials, from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2027. It says the island keeps these rules in line with the UK’s, under the Customs and Excise Agreement 1979. The UK’s list of energy-saving materials includes solar panels, home electricity storage batteries, smart diverters and heat pumps.

The relief is for materials that are installed, so check the VAT rate shown on your quote. Isle of Man Customs and Excise can confirm how it applies to your job, on 01624 648130 or at customs@gov.im.

From the Isle of Man Treasury’s announcements of 23 March 2022 and 7 February 2024, and the UK list in Schedule 8, Group 23 of the Value Added Tax Act 1994, all read on 16 October 2026.

The fixed costs you can plan for

  • Manx Utilities’ tariff change: at least £200 plus VAT to join the Sustainable Generation tariff, more if its engineering checks find extra work is needed. It gives a formal quotation first.
  • A missed appointment: £138 plus VAT if you cancel with less than one working day’s notice, or the site is not ready when Manx Utilities attends.
  • Building Control fees: only if your electrician is not registered with NICEIC Domestic Installer or NAPIT Part P CPS, in which case you apply to Building Control before work starts and pay its fees.
  • A planning application: only for a flat roof, a conservation area or a registered building. Our planning guide explains when.

What a good quote shows

  • The system size in kWp, and the make and model of the panels and inverter.
  • The VAT rate applied.
  • Scaffolding, the Manx Utilities tariff change and any other extras, itemised.
  • The expected yearly output, and how it was worked out.
  • When each payment is due, and the warranties, in writing.

Comparing two or three written quotes on price per kWp is the quickest way to see value. Our guide to choosing an installer has the questions to ask.

The smaller step: plug-in solar

A plug-in kit is a much smaller system that plugs into a socket. It still needs Manx Utilities’ consent and is limited to 800W. It earns nothing for exported power, so it suits homes that use electricity in the day. Our plug-in savings calculator works out a kit’s payback, and plug-in or rooftop compares the two.

Common questions

How much do solar panels cost on the Isle of Man?

Each installer sets its own price, so the figure that matters is your written quote. To judge it, divide the price by the system size in kWp, then compare that with what each kWp earns: about £203 a year on a south-facing Douglas roof if you use half the electricity at home, at Manx Utilities’ rates.

Is there VAT on solar panels on the Isle of Man?

The Isle of Man Treasury applies a 0% VAT rate to the supply and installation of energy-saving materials from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2027, keeping the island in line with the UK, whose list includes solar panels. Check the rate on your quote, or ask Customs and Excise on 01624 648130.

How long do solar panels take to pay back here?

It depends on your quote. On a south-facing Douglas roof, using half the electricity at home, each £1,000 of quote per kWp takes about 4.9 years to pay back at Manx Utilities’ rates. The checker on this page works it out for your quote, your part of the island and the way your roof faces.

Is there a grant for solar panels?

Not at present. The island’s new Heat Wise Home scheme does not cover solar. Our grants guide has the details.
