Home batteries and solar on the Isle of Man

Independent Checked at the sourceLast updated

Can I have a home battery with solar on the Isle of Man?

The short answer

With rooftop solar, ask Manx Utilities first. With plug-in solar, only if the battery is part of a compliant kit, and none is on the register yet.

Manx Utilities does not allow stand-alone plug-in batteries. For a battery alongside rooftop solar, contact Manx Utilities before you buy. Batteries are not covered by the Heat Wise Home grant.

A battery stores electricity your panels make during the day so you can use it in the evening, instead of sending it to the grid. This guide covers what the island’s rules say, what they do not say, and the simple arithmetic behind why people want one.

Batteries with plug-in solar

Manx Utilities’ plug-in solar page is clear: stand-alone plug-in battery systems are not currently permitted. It says a battery may be allowed where it forms part of a compliant integrated plug-in solar system and meets all the technical requirements.

In practice that door is closed for now. When we counted the ENA Connect Direct register on 15 October 2026, none of the entries marked Compliant described a battery. Our plug-in solar rules cover the rest of what a kit must meet.

From Manx Utilities’ plug-in solar page, read on 25 September 2026, and our own count of the ENA Connect Direct Plug-in Solar register on 15 October 2026.

Batteries with rooftop or garden solar

Manx Utilities’ guidance for hardwired solar covers the export tariff, the equipment standards and its approval process. For a battery, check these points with Manx Utilities before you buy:

  • whether the battery needs its own application, and on which form;
  • whether a battery may send stored electricity to the grid, and if so whether that is paid under the Sustainable Generation tariff;
  • whether a battery that sits with solar may also charge from the grid at a cheaper rate.

Manx Utilities can be reached on 01624 687687 or at enquiries@manxutilities.im. If you already have solar panels or a battery and want to add a plug-in kit as well, its plug-in page asks you to contact it in advance, because your connection agreement may need to change.

The electrical work itself falls under Part P of the Building Regulations, like any solar installation. Changing a consumer unit or adding a new circuit is notifiable work, so use a business registered with NICEIC Domestic Installer or NAPIT Part P CPS. Our guide to choosing an installer explains how to check.

From Manx Utilities’ domestic tariffs, electricity network enquiry and test certificate pages, and Planning and Building Control’s page on electrical installations in homes, all read on 16 October 2026.

Why people want a battery: the arithmetic

On Manx Utilities’ standard tariff, a unit of electricity you buy costs 29.5p. A unit a hardwired system sends to the grid earns 9.7p under the Sustainable Generation tariff. So every unit you store and use yourself, instead of exporting it, is worth the difference: 19.8p, before allowing for the energy a battery loses in charging and discharging.

Whether that pays back depends on what the battery costs, how much spare solar you have to store, and how long the battery lasts. Ask any installer to show you their sum, and check it against these two rates.

Rates from Manx Utilities’ domestic tariffs page, read on 28 September 2026. The 19.8p is our own subtraction.

Common questions

Can I use a plug-in battery on the Isle of Man?

Not a stand-alone one. Manx Utilities only allows a battery that is part of a compliant integrated plug-in solar kit, and on 15 October 2026 no compliant entry on the ENA register described a battery.

Is the Tesla Powerwall allowed on the Isle of Man?

Any home battery alongside a hardwired solar system needs to meet Manx Utilities’ requirements and be installed by a Part P registered electrician. Ask Manx Utilities about your chosen battery before you buy, on 01624 687687 or at enquiries@manxutilities.im.

Is there a grant for solar batteries on the Isle of Man?

Batteries are not on the Heat Wise Home scheme’s list of supported works, and the scheme says it does not cover any solar technologies. Our grants guide has the details.

Does Manx Utilities pay for electricity exported from a battery?

The Sustainable Generation tariff is described for renewable generation from solar, wind or hydro. Ask Manx Utilities how it treats battery export before you rely on it.
