How do I get Manx Utilities approval for solar panels?
The short answer
Apply before anything is connected. Send Manx Utilities its Electricity Network Enquiry form, then wait for its written approval.
Include a photo of your meter, full details and data sheets for the equipment you plan to install, and the G98, G99 or G100 application form. Joining the Sustainable Generation tariff, which pays 9.7p for each unit exported, costs at least £200 plus VAT.
This guide is for hardwired solar: panels on a roof or in the garden, wired into your home by an electrician. For a kit that plugs into a socket, Manx Utilities runs a separate process, covered in our plug-in solar approval guide. Manx Utilities is clear on one point above all: “Because Isle of Man legislation differs from UK legislation, you must not connect any generation equipment to the Manx Utilities network until you have received written approval from us.”
The steps, in order
- Check planning. Roof panels are usually permitted development, but a flat roof, a conservation area or a registered building needs a planning application. Our planning guide explains when.
- Choose a Part P registered electrician. Manx Utilities says the electrical work must be completed and certified by a Part P compliant electrician. Our installer guide shows how to check a registration.
- Send the Electricity Network Enquiry form. Include a clear photo of your electricity meter and the area around it, full details of all the equipment you plan to install, a data sheet for each item, and the relevant G98, G99 or G100 application forms. Your electrician can tell you which applies.
- Manx Utilities checks the network. Where your existing service is suitable and no further work is needed, the charge is a minimum of £200 plus VAT. If its engineering studies find more work is needed, it gives you a formal quotation first.
- Wait for written approval. Nothing is connected until it arrives.
- Install and commission. Your electrician fits the system, then you send Manx Utilities the Type Test Certification and the relevant G98, G99 or G100 commissioning form. Its Test Certificate and Connection Form, signed by a Part P registered electrician, is needed before any connection to a property.

What the equipment must meet
- The ENA’s G98, G99 or G100 standard for generating equipment. Manx Utilities points to the ENA Connect Direct register for the list of compliant devices.
- The BS 7671 wiring regulations for all equipment.
- Hardwired. Manx Utilities says plug-in devices do not qualify for the Sustainable Generation tariff.
- Solar, wind or hydro. The tariff covers solar PV, wind turbines, hydro generators, or a combination.
The Sustainable Generation tariff
Once approved, you can sell the electricity you do not use back to Manx Utilities at a fixed rate of 9.7p a unit. The tariff is an add-on to your existing electricity tariff, not a replacement for it. It supports systems with a maximum export capacity of up to 10 kW, which Manx Utilities says is subject to network studies and may be reduced if an installation could affect the network.
Every unit you use at home instead of buying is worth 29.5p on the standard tariff, so the best value comes from using as much as you can while the sun is up. Our quote checker works out what a system is worth a year at these rates.
Charges to plan for
| What | Charge |
|---|---|
| Joining the Sustainable Generation tariff, where no extra work is needed | At least £200 plus VAT |
| Where engineering studies find more work is needed | A formal quotation, based on complexity |
| Cancelling with less than one working day’s notice, or the site not ready when Manx Utilities attends | £138 plus VAT |
Installing solar panels on the island also carries a 0% rate of VAT until 31 March 2027, which our costs guide explains.
The same form for other changes
Manx Utilities uses the same Electricity Network Enquiry form to switch to its Electric Vehicle tariff or its Comfy Heat tariff for electric heating, so if you are planning more than one change, you can mention them all when you get in touch. Our guides to EV charging, heating and hot water and home batteries cover each one.
