This page explains what personal information this website handles, why, and what your rights are. The short version: we use Google Analytics to count visits, but only if you agree, and nothing is stored until you do. There are no advertising trackers and we don’t sell anyone’s data.
Who we are
Isle of Man Solar (isleofmansolar.com) is run from the Isle of Man under the business name Isle of Man Solar. We are the “controller” of the personal information described on this page, which means we decide how it is used and we are responsible for it.
To ask anything about your information, or to use any of your rights, email contact@isleofmansolar.com. We don’t have a Data Protection Officer, because the law doesn’t require one for a site of this size, but we will answer you ourselves.
We are based on the Isle of Man, so our main law is the Isle of Man’s data protection law: the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Data Protection (Application of GDPR) Order 2018. If you are in the United Kingdom, the UK GDPR may also give you rights, and we respect those too.
Information collected when you visit
Server logs
Like almost every website, our web host records basic technical details each time a page is requested. This includes:
- your IP address (the internet address of your device or network)
- the date and time of the visit
- the page or file requested
- the website that sent you here, if your browser shares it
- your browser and device type
These logs are used to keep the site running, secure and free of faults, for example to spot and block attacks. We don’t use them to work out who you are or to build a profile of you. Our host, Hostinger, keeps them for a limited period for security and fault-finding and then deletes them.
Why we are allowed to do this: our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website.
No outside services while you read
All of the site’s code, fonts and images, including the animation libraries GSAP and three.js, are served from our own web host. While you read the site, your browser does not contact any other company. That only changes if you click a link to another website.
The savings calculator
The calculator works entirely in your browser. The figures you enter are not sent to us or stored anywhere.
Cookies
Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser. This site sets no cookies until you agree to them. When you first arrive, a banner asks whether we may count your visit. Until you answer, and if you answer no, nothing is stored and nothing about your visit is sent to Google. If you say yes, Google Analytics sets two cookies on this website’s own address: _ga, which tells Google whether yours is a repeat visit using a random number, and _ga_…, which tracks a single session. Both last about 400 days, which we measured rather than assumed. We only ever see totals, never who you are. Google handles that information as our processor under the Google Privacy Policy. You can change your mind at any time using the cookie choice link in the footer, and if you switch to no we delete those two cookies straight away. There are still no advertising cookies and no social media tracking pixels. Separately, if you press “Pause animation” your browser remembers that choice in its local storage so the animation stays paused next time; that setting is never sent to us.
The only cookies our site uses are the standard WordPress login cookies, and those are only set for the people who edit the site when they sign in.
Google Analytics was added on 2 October 2026, and this page and the consent banner went live the same day. If we ever add anything else that uses cookies, we will update this page first and ask for your consent before any non-essential cookie is set.
Google Search Console
We use Google Search Console to see how our pages appear in Google search results, for example which searches show our pages and how often people click through. It adds no code and no cookies to our site. The information comes from Google’s own records of searches on Google, and we only see totals, not individual people. Google handles that information under the Google Privacy Policy.
If you contact us
If you email us, we will use your email address, your name if you give it, and what you tell us, to reply and to deal with your message, for example to correct a mistake on the site. We don’t add you to any mailing list.
Why we are allowed to do this: our legitimate interest in answering the people who contact us. We keep emails for up to two years after our last contact with you, unless we need them for longer to deal with a complaint or a legal claim.
Our Facebook, Instagram and YouTube pages
Our site links to our social media pages but doesn’t embed them, so nothing from Meta or Google loads on our pages. If you visit, follow, comment on or message our pages on those platforms, we will see your public profile and what you send us, and we will use it to reply.
Meta gives page owners statistics about visitors to their Facebook and Instagram pages (“Page Insights”). For those statistics, Meta Platforms Ireland Limited and we are joint controllers, and Meta takes primary responsibility under its Page Insights Controller Addendum. Otherwise, each platform handles your information under its own privacy policy.
Who we share information with
We don’t sell or rent personal information, and we don’t share it for advertising. We only share it with:
- Hostinger, which hosts the site and handles server logs for us under a contract that requires it to protect the data
- our email provider, if you email us
- professional advisers, such as accountants or lawyers, if we need their help
- the police, a regulator or a court, if the law requires us to
Where information is stored
The Isle of Man is not part of the UK or the EU, but the EU and the UK both recognise that its data protection law gives adequate protection. Our host stores the site on servers in the United Kingdom (Manchester). Some of the services named on this page, such as Google and Meta, may handle information in the United States or elsewhere. When that happens, they rely on safeguards the law recognises, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and its UK Extension, or standard contractual clauses.
Your rights
Under Isle of Man data protection law, and the UK GDPR if you are in the UK, you have the right to:
- see the personal information we hold about you and get a copy
- correct information that is wrong or incomplete
- have information deleted in some circumstances
- restrict how we use it in some circumstances
- object to us using it on the basis of our legitimate interests
- receive information you gave us in a format you can take elsewhere, where that applies
- withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on consent
To use any of these rights, email contact@isleofmansolar.com. It is free. We may need to ask you to confirm who you are. We will reply within one month, or tell you within that month if we need longer because your request is complicated.
We keep so little personal information that, in practice, we may hold nothing that identifies you. Server logs record IP addresses, not names, so if you ask about them, it helps to tell us your IP address and roughly when you visited.
How to complain
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to a data protection regulator:
- Isle of Man: the Isle of Man Information Commissioner, inforights.im
- United Kingdom: the Information Commissioner’s Office, ico.org.uk
- European Union: the data protection authority in the country where you live
Keeping information safe
The site is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Access to the site’s admin area is limited to the people who run it, protected by two-step login, and we keep WordPress and its plugins up to date. To stop password-guessing, if someone tries to log in to the admin area and gets the password wrong, the site records the internet (IP) address used and blocks it for a while. This only affects people trying to log in, not visitors reading the site. No website is perfectly secure, but if something went wrong that put your information at risk, we would deal with it as the law requires, including telling the regulator and, where needed, you.
Other things you should know
- No automated decisions. We don’t make decisions about you by computer alone, and we don’t profile visitors.
- Children. The site is written for adults choosing equipment for their homes. It is not aimed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect information about them.
- Other websites. We link to Manx Utilities, the ENA register, shops and others. We are not responsible for how those sites handle your information, so please read their privacy policies.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page whenever we change how we handle information, for example if we add analytics or a newsletter. The date at the top shows when it last changed. For any change that needs your consent, we will ask for it on the site before the change applies to you.
